Friday Fictioneers – Write a 100-word story based on the Photo Prompt image above by © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields
Age is No Barrier
She sat in the same place, on the low ridge where the grass met the sand. Mel met her when walking along Tahunanui Beach collecting shells, after taking her children to school.
Her name was Nessie, aged late 70s. Mel formed a friendship when she would sit with her and chat. Nessie swam out deep every day of the year, then sat and dried off on her grassy seat, watching the world go by. Nessie laughed about the ‘hoopla’ during the mid-winter swim.
“What’s all the fuss about? I do that every day!”
Mel’s shells reminded her of Nessie, a remarkable lady.
This story is based on a true event – Nessie aka Agnes was a daily visitor to Tahunanui Beach in Nelson, NZ in the ’90s and probably before. The cold winter temperatures never discouraged her, she was always positive, down to earth, and a huge inspiration to anyone she was in conversation with.

Fleur, what a lovely surprise she’s based on a real person. I bet she enriched a lot of lives along the way, including yours.

Thanks msjadeli, yes she was a real sweetie.
I invited Nessie for afternoon tea, we had such a good chat and a laugh. She always wore her bowls hat! Very sun-smart!

Dear Fleur,
I want to be Nessie when (if) I grow up. 😉 Nice story.

Thank you, Bear. I’m trying to find a photo if Nessie or an article that was once in the paper about her. 🙂
