This patchwork is dark brown and smooth. It has a history, and has just cracked a century!
Spreading the Joy
Vegemite is a thick, dark brown Australian food spread made from leftover brewers’ yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. It was developed by Cyril Callister in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1922, and it first hit stores on October 25, 1923. Wikipedia
In New Zealand, I grew up with Marmite as the go-to in the cupboard for a sandwich or toast spread, and Mum put a blob of it in stews, casseroles, soups and broths.
Now here’s the question…let’s do a poll. Marmite or Vegemite? According to the the announcement on the radio this morning, Vegemite only came to be because ingredients for Marmite were in short supply. But here we are, 100 years to the day when Vegemite went on the shelves.
Is it a bit like the old question, should pineapple be on a pizza? I love pineapple cooked or raw. and I like both Vegemite and Marmite, although Marmite is stronger in taste.
It should be Vegemite Day today! We should have a National Holiday! I met a delightful shop owner in Waterford, her shop is ‘The Nice Little Shop’, and she loves her Vegemite!

May your day be smooth and spreadable, bring you joy, and energise you!
Thanks for reading
